Care

Regarding care the white shepherd is a very easy dog. A daily brush with a brush or comb does wonders and keeps the fur of your dog in a good condition. The fur of the white shepherd consists of double coat. The first coat protects the dog against the cold, as the topcoat protects him against the rain and the heat. There are also longcoated white shepherds. These are dogs with a longer coat which neat some extra care. By taking care of the fur the air can circulate between the hair, the mud and dead hair will be removed and the sebaceous glands of the skin are stimulated to give their product to the fur. Because of the sebaceous matter the hair is fed and stays flexible.  The ruption of the combing stimulates the skin and the hairgrowth. When you comb your dog you must pay attention that you do not remove the undercoat. This is why it is best to comb a white shepherd only if he is dirty or becomes entangled. If your dog is full of mud the best thing to do is rub him dry with an old towel and let the mud dry, when the mud is dry you can easily remove it.

Wash
You have to limit washing the dog as much as possible because by washing the dog you remove the natural bodily fat out of the fur. However from time to time it will be necessary to wash the dog, for instance when he has been rolling into something stinking. Put a rubber mat on your showerfloor, so the dog cannot slip and give him a shower with lukewarm water. Only use special dog shampoo and rub this in thoroughly, then wash the soap residues out of the fur. Watch carefully that no shampoo gets into the eyes and ears.

Moult
The white shepherd will be moulting about twice a year. The hair will partially fall of and be replaced by new hair. This needs some extra attention with combing so the new hair can grow easily and to prefend your home from becoming a very hairy place.

Further care
The further care of your white shepherd is fairly simple and can be limited by checking the length of the nails, the cleaning of the eyes and ears and keeping the dog free of flees, louses and ticks. Also the teeth deserve the right attention. With the proper food this will not be a problem.

Nourishment
Every breeder will have a certain preference for  a certain food. It is very important what the breeder has been feeding the puppy so far.
